For this project, I originally wanted to create a story that was told through sound (as much of the class did). However, upon further inspection of the sounds available, I found that my project took a turn towards a culmination random and unrelated sounds that related in the way that I edited the sounds a used them in repetition. I started my piece with most of the sounds being unedited and then slowly changed them throughout the piece by adjusting their pitch and tone as well as changing the speed and sequence of repetition. If I were to edit all of the sounds right from the start then the changes I made would not have been as noticeable. Another strategy that I used to achieve my darker and unsettling theme was building up them sounds before cutting them off, creating suspense. I them utilized the sound of a page turning to symbolize a sift in sounds and theme and in a way breaking up the piece into separate movements. One specific sound that really helped me achieve the darker and offsetting mood was one of a child playing with a dog. The original sound is playful and light hearted but by deepening the tone and slowing the sound made the dog sound angry and viscous while the playful noises of the child sounds like the menacing growls of a gremlin. In separate but similar sound, I used playful noises from a baby in repetition where with each repetition I made the sound slower and deeper giving a creepy and abnormal vibe to the sound and the over all soundscape. The mood of final piece jumps from calm in places to busy and offsetting throughout the piece in an effort to leave the listener confused and uneasy. In this way, the sound scape achieved to mood that I originally discussed in my brainstorm however I did not end up trying to tell a story as I had originally planned.
