Project 3: The Chess Match

My final project is completely different than the idea that I originally wanted to do. My original idea was too close to just making a music video and on top of that, I began to realize that I had bitten off more then I could chew. The weekend before the project was due, I scrapped my old idea and started over after an inspiring game of chess. I decided that animating a chess game would be simple enough theme that left me a lot of room for creativity along the way.

My plan of attack was to get the video after so I could get an idea of the perspective I was going for. In the end, this helped me frame the shots when I filmed. As for the animated portion, I used Animate CC, Illustrated, and Photoshop to create my chess piece characters and bring them to life. I struggled to get used to the Animate CC program at first, but through a number of youtube videos and some practice I was able to speed up my pace of work. The tweens gave me the must trouble as it took a lot of fore thought to figure out where to use them.

Though out the animation, I made sure to try my best to implement the principles of animation. Out of the 12 principles, I chose to focus on squash and stretch, anticipation, followthrough, and slow-in slow-out.

I had a lot of fun with this project and I am really happy with my final product. This is not to say that it didn't get very tedious and stressful at times.
